Mentoring the next generation of designers

by Kirsten Murray, Senior Designer

We’re pleased as punch to be partnering with Edinburgh College this year on their sector-leading Mentoring Programme for Visual Communication students.

The programme helps prepare students for working in the creative industry through one-to-one mentoring, industry placements and guidance on one-week design projects for covetable clients such as G.F. Smith, Edinburgh Zoo and Innes & Gunn.

The programme kicked off with an event at the college’s Granton Campus, where we met the students for the first time and had a peek at the work they’ve been doing for the DMA Breakthrough Award project. The mentors were also put to the test with a 20 minute creative brief to save Volkswagen. There’s nothing like a short deadline and an endless supply of cake to yield strong creative ideas.

Design tutor, Helena Good, said “bringing the design agencies on board as partners will be great for the students as it gives them new ways of getting the knowledge about the industry that they’ll need when they enter the workplace. Having access to professionals working to incredibly high standards in the latest practices, including digital, and getting their honest feedback and guidance is invaluable to their development”.
