How to brand your start-up

by Shauna Rafferty, Account Executive

Branding is one of the most important ways to equip your start-up for success. It creates personality, builds trust, adds value, inspires your team and attracts customers. Here’s how:

Your brand is the personality of your business – image, voice, the lot. We all know the frustration of setting a bad first impression, forever feeling on the back-foot to prove you really are as great/successful/funny/intelligent as you want people to think you are.

This is no different for your start-up, it’s your own identity and your way to differentiate from your competitors. You’ve done all the work on refining your perfect product and service, branding allows you to show that off.

How it works

People purchase a product or service because it fulfils a need or want. In such a saturated market, it’s about ensuring they choose you over all others – because you appeal to them as a person – creating an emotional connection. As customers, we are drawn to brands and companies that represent the values we share, the attitudes we love and the personality traits we praise.

Think of all your favourite brands. You relate to them because of their personality – what they say about themselves, says a lot about you. If a company is putting itself out there as the clothing for the boring, you’re hardly going to pull on that brown cardigan from Beige Ltd. with pride.

Start-ups can be hectic, so it’s difficult to find the time for the creative part. It’s key to remember that launching your start-up means highlighting who you are and what you’re capable of from the get-go. You don’t want to waste time trying to convince potential customers that you really are everything they need and more – you need to show them!

"If you don’t give the market the story to talk about, they’ll define your brand story for you."

David Brier

This is our bread and butter and it’s what we love at Teviot. Whether it’s a new brand identity or a refresh, we workshop with you and your team to define your business. We want to understand your values, focus on your aim and create the brand that best represents who you are and where you want to go with your business. We guide this by defining the human-like characteristics that will set out how your brand communicates and the role it plays. We want to know your story.

"It’s easy to make decisions when you know what your values are."

 Roy E. Disney

Ask yourself: what’s the purpose of your business? Who are your target customers? How do you want to make them feel? We take all of this and shape your unique brand identity. Creating clear, definitive brand guidelines provides the consistency and familiarity for customers to trust you.

We’re here to make sure you don’t choose something you’ll regret down the line by providing you with a future-proof, personality poised brand and the accompanying marketing and social strategies to showcase who you really are to the people who matter.

Covering everything from brand identity to social media, we’ve been doing this for years for the brands you know.

If you’re interested in what we can do for you, get in touch or come and find us at Scotland’s largest startup event, Startup Summit on 31st October where we’ll be talking all things branding and marketing
